Chen-Oi Chin, PhD.

Chen-Oi Chin is a seasoned professional with extensive and diverse expertise as an administrator, academic researcher, business and cultural consultant. Chin’s practical business knowledge combines with her language and literature training allowing her to provide her clients with multi-layered insights on human nature, behavior, attitudes, and thinking patterns. Her special areas of expertise are China, Singapore, Taiwan and North America.

Chin is currently the Executive Director of the Chinese American Educational and Cultural Center of Michigan (CAECC), a statewide nonprofit organization. Under her directorship since its inception in 1976, CAECC has developed a reputation for excellence exemplified by the continuous grant support of the federal and state agencies, and several private foundations. Over the years, Chin has coordinated hundreds of cultural projects, jointly sponsored by educational agencies and corporations.

In addition, for over two decades Chin has served as a business and cultural consultant for Prudential, Berlitz, GMAC, International Orientation Resources, and Langua Tutor on China, Singapore and other Asian regions. Among her many Fortune 500 clients are vice presidents and senior executives with McDonald's, General Motors, Coca Cola, Northwest Airlines, Delphi, Daimler Chrysler, Lear, Federal Mogul and, Johnson and Control.

Chin has also served as a grant proposal reviewer for the Federal Bilingual Program in Washington D.C., the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, and was an on-site evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Chin’s academic interests are Leadership, Management and Culture. As an adjunct professor she teaches courses on Executive Skills Development, Leadership and Management in the College of Management at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan. In addition to her research on global leadership cultural competence, Chin is also interested in the cultural dimensions individualism vs. collectivism and relationship dynamics (guanxi) from the Chinese/American leadership perspectives. She has published extensively, most recently an award-winning paper on global leadership competence from a cultural intelligence perspective.

Chin received her B.A. from National Taiwan University; M.A. from Yale University and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University, both in East Asian Languages and Literatures. In addition to her training in Chinese culture, she also studied French, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian during her undergraduate and graduate studies.

Chin’s community outreach activities include serving on the advisory board of the state and federal government on arts, multicultural and bilingual programs as well as on several major Michigan arts and cultural organizations. She has been a frequent guest speaker at various universities and organizations. In 1999, she was invited as a distinguished speaker on Leadership at Graduate School of Business, Eastern Michigan University.
